How to use this calculator
- Enter your pay amount and choose what it’s per: hour, day, week, two weeks, half-month, month or year.
- Set your hours per week and days per week. These turn hourly and daily pay into yearly pay, and the other way around.
- Set weeks per year to the weeks you’re paid, which is 52 for most salaried jobs. Paid holidays and vacation still count.
- Add any unpaid days off, such as unpaid leave or days a contractor doesn’t bill.
- To see take-home pay, open After-tax estimate and choose your state and filing status.
The table converts your pay into every period at once. With a state selected, it adds a take-home column.
The conversion formulas
Everything goes through annual pay. Time-based pay (hourly, daily, weekly) depends on how much you work; pay periods (biweekly, semimonthly, monthly) are fixed fractions of the year.
- Monthly = annual ÷ 12
- Semimonthly = annual ÷ 24
- Biweekly = annual ÷ 26
- Weekly = annual ÷ paid weeks
- Daily = annual ÷ paid days
Worked examples
Salary to hourly. A $65,000 salary with a 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks is 2,080 hours, so the hourly equivalent is $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25. Per period that’s $5,416.67 a month, $2,708.33 semimonthly, $2,500 biweekly and $1,250 a week.
Unpaid time off. Take 10 unpaid days and the same $65,000 is earned over 2,000 hours, so each hour you actually work is worth $32.50. For an hourly worker at $30 an hour, the same 10 days cut annual pay from $62,400 to $60,000.
Hourly to salary and salary to hourly: the quick rules
For a full-time job paid for 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, there are 2,080 paid hours.
- Hourly to salary: multiply the hourly wage by 2,080. $20 an hour is $41,600 a year. For a rough mental figure, double the wage and add three zeros: $20 becomes about $40,000.
- Salary to hourly: divide the salary by 2,080. $50,000 a year is $24.04 an hour. The mental shortcut is the reverse: halve the salary and drop three zeros, so $50,000 is roughly $25.
The shortcuts run about 4% off because they use 2,000 hours instead of 2,080. Part-time schedules, unpaid leave and overtime change the hours, so enter your own in the calculator; for weeks over 40 hours, the overtime calculator adds time-and-a-half pay.

What a salary is worth after taxes
Gross pay isn’t what you take home. Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) apply everywhere, and most states add income tax. Here’s $65,000 a year for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions, using the same 2026 tax engine as our paycheck calculator:
| State | Take-home per year | Per month | Per hour worked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas or Florida (no income tax) | $54,408 | $4,534 | $26.16 |
| Pennsylvania | $52,367 | $4,364 | $25.18 |
| California | $51,689 | $4,307 | $24.85 |
| Illinois | $51,335 | $4,278 | $24.68 |
| New York (excluding NYC tax) | $51,183 | $4,265 | $24.61 |
So a $31.25-an-hour job takes home about $24.60 to $26.20 an hour, depending on the state. For your exact paycheck with 401(k), insurance and W-4 details, use the paycheck calculator; for your full-year federal tax, use the income tax calculator.
Tips for comparing pay
- Compare offers on total pay per hour. A salaried job that regularly runs 50 hours a week pays less per hour than the same salary at 40.
- Count benefits. Employer 401(k) matching, health insurance and paid time off can be worth thousands of dollars a year.
- Watch the overtime rules. Most hourly workers earn time-and-a-half after 40 hours a week under federal law; this calculator assumes straight-time pay.
- Plan around paychecks, not salary. Budget with your take-home pay. Biweekly workers get two months a year with three paychecks.
Assumptions & limitations
- Conversions assume the same hours every paid week. Overtime, shift differentials, bonuses and commissions aren’t included.
- Biweekly, semimonthly and monthly pay are exact fractions of annual pay (÷ 26, ÷ 24, ÷ 12). Some years have 27 biweekly paydays, which some employers handle by paying slightly less per check.
- The take-home estimate uses the same 2026 tax engine as our paycheck calculator, with no pre-tax deductions or dependents. Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T, and state tax is an estimate of annual liability. Local income taxes aren’t included.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you’re paid in a year. For a full-time 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks that’s 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. A quick shortcut is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros, which gives about $50,000.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide your annual salary by the hours you’re paid for in a year, usually 2,080 for a full-time job. A $65,000 salary works out to $31.25 an hour. If you regularly work more than 40 hours on a salary, your true hourly rate is lower.
What’s the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly means every other week, which gives 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly means twice a month, usually on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day, which gives 24 paychecks. On the same salary, each semimonthly paycheck is a little larger, but you get two fewer of them.
How many work hours are in a year?
A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. Paid holidays and paid vacation still count as paid hours. Only unpaid time off reduces the total, by your daily hours for each unpaid day.
Is $25 an hour a good salary?
At full time, $25 an hour is $52,000 a year before taxes. Whether that’s comfortable depends heavily on where you live, your household and your housing costs. The take-home estimate shows what you’d actually receive after federal, Social Security, Medicare and state taxes.
How much is $65,000 a year per month?
$65,000 a year is about $5,417 a month before taxes, $2,500 every two weeks or $1,250 a week. After taxes it’s less, and the exact amount depends on your state, filing status and deductions.
